Psoralea corylifolia is an extremely powerful medicine for vitiligo (Leucoderma). This plant grows well rich alluvial soil and is very commonly used in central and southern India. Ayurvedic and Siddha (ancient Tamil medicine system) systems are using this herb to treat vitiligo for centuries. The Chinese medicine system learnt the significance of this herb from the siddha medicine which moved from the south of India to china through great Buddhist monks like Damo (Bodhi Dharma).
Ayurveda claims that this herb pacifies vata, and hence cures diseases related to skin and reproductive organs. In the ancient Siddha texts this herb is hailed as one of the most potent herbs to treat skin diseases. Though in tamil this herb is called as கார்போகரிசி (pronounced as Kaarbokarisi)
Psoralea corylifolia Chemical Composition:
This plant is rich in numerous bio-active compounds, and is rich in of flavonoids and coumarins. This plant also has genistein which is a strong anti-cancer agent. It has other chemical agents which acts as an aphrodisiac and improves reproductive health. However the most important chemical agent present in Psoralea is psoralen.
Psoralen is compound and technically as furocoumarins. Psoralea corylifolia is the richest source of psoralen(also called psoralene). It is very significant because it is used in PUVA (which is Psoralen +UVA). PUVA treatment is the most widely accepted treatment for skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo. The presence of good amounts of psoralen along with other chemical agents which rejuvenates skin health; makes these seeds a potent herb for treating Vitiligo.
Psoralea for Vitiligo:
These seeds have certain chemical agents that are highly potent in detoxifying the skin. The seeds can be ground to a paste and then applied on the affected areas, as an alternative extra virgin oil of these seeds can be used for treatment.
These seeds are very effective in treating leucoderma (vitiligo) and other skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema (even leprosy). The oil or the paste made out of these seeds will stimulate the melanoblast cells in the skin. These Melanoblasts are the precursor cells of melanocytes. Melanocytes in turn are responsible for the production of melanin, the pigments that give skin its color. Hence these seeds can be an effective treatment option for vitiligo and dermatoses.
Method of application:
These seeds are potent and highly nutritious, hence it can be used externally as well as internally. For external use one can use the oil or grind the seeds in to a paste and then apply it over the vitiligo affected areas. Freshly ground paste is more potent than oil. The curative properties are better when applied during early morning coupled with good exposure to sunlight (for around 20-30 minutes).
For internal use, it is better to take it along with ginger. Boil two cups of water along with cut ginger in to it (around 20-30 g) and finally add babchi seeds and let the mixture to cool. Drink the mixture once it is cooled down. It is better to drink it in an empty stomach during early mornings. One can see better results by drinking this twice a day.
Vitiligo patients who are pregnant should avoid this treatment. This should not be practiced by people who undergo PUVA treatment, PUVA treatment is already based on psoralen. Learn more about the Natural Vitiligo Treatment System
